The Fort Wayne Derby Girls, a local Fort Wayne sports team, hosted their second charity bout successfully raising over $2000 for SCAN. The Fort Wayne Derby Girls, a non-profit organization, founded by two local businesswomen, has contributed over $6000 since March 2006 to SCAN, the Charis House-the women and children’s division of the Fort Wayne Rescue Ministries, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Morgan Taylor Fundraiser. The next charity event will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 8pm hosted by the Roller Dome South. The bout themed, ‘Derby Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’ will contribute the proceeds to the Great Lakes Burn Camp located in Jackson, Michigan. www.greatlakesburncamp.com -Great Lakes Burn Camp is a special place for kids ages 7-17 to meet, heal, grow and support other burn survivors. Kids share their stories and bond with other kids in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Unconditional love and acceptance is only part of what each camper receives at Great Lakes Burn Camp. They strive to remove all barriers that may keep children from participating in events and activities. Campers also receive well-balanced meals and 24-hour medical supervision. dressing changes, physical therapy or other special medical services are managed by the camp nurse. Transportation to and from camp is provided. Opportunities for burn survivors are made possible through generous financial and material donations and services provided by businesses, organizations and individuals throughout the nation.
The Fort Wayne Derby Girls encourage community involvement from all socio-economic groups in Fort Wayne and its surrounding communities. The league embodies the strength, courage, and vitality of Fort Wayne women, but also serves to provide another form of recreational amateur athletic entertainment to the Summit City.
Fort Wayne Derby Girls requires its members to contribute to the community through both volunteering and monetary contributions to Fort Wayne charities. The skating program includes regular supervised training and instruction for city competition between four derby teams comprised of a maximum of fourteen members each. These competitions serve to prepare the teams to represent Fort Wayne at national competitions.
